Building and testing a custom laser scaler tool

Introduction

In our latest YouTube video, we dive into the intricate process of building and testing a custom laser scaling tool specifically designed for the FIFISH V6 Expert - although it could easily be adapted for other models. This project aims to provide an innovative solution for measuring objects underwater, a common challenge with underwater video observation.

The Need for Laser Scaling in Underwater Measurement

Measuring objects underwater using ROVs can present a unique challenge. Laser scaling tools can addresse this challenge by offer a remote, non-contact method to accurately measure sizes and distances between objects, making them an ideal solution for ROV-based observations and operations. The ability to measure objects from a distance without direct interaction not only helps to maintain the safety of the equipment but also provides precise and reliable data, essential for various underwater research and exploration tasks.

A laser scaler operates by projecting two laser beams, which are fixed at a predetermined, known distance apart. When these beams are directed onto an object, they create two distinct reference points, allowing the observer to approximate the size of the object in real time. The video can then be analysed more closely in post-production to provide a more accurate size measurement for the object. Free software packages like Image-J allow users to calibrate a digital ruler for images based on a known measurement in an image (i.e., the distance between the two reference points). This digital ruler can then be used to measure objects within the image more accurately.

Why Green Laser?

For our project, we chose to use green lasers. This decision is not arbitrary. In deeper water, red light tends to attenuate more rapidly, losing its visibility and effectiveness. Green light, however, maintains its clarity over longer distances underwater, making it an ideal choice for our laser scaler.

Building the Laser Scaler

The video details the step-by-step process of building the laser scaler for the FIFISH V6 Expert. We carefully selected components that ensure both functionality and minimal interference with the ROV’s (Remotely Operated Vehicle) movement. The build process is designed to be accessible, with links provided for all the required parts.

Testing the Tool

The video shows the test run with the newly constructed lasers. We were pleased to report that the custom-built laser scaler performed well. The green laser proved effective in providing clear, visible measurements underwater. Moreover, the design ensured that there was minimal impact on the ROV's maneuverability, a critical aspect for any additional tool used in such delicate operations.

Conclusion

Our journey in creating a custom laser scaler for the FIFISH V6 Expert was not just about building a tool; it was about enhancing the capabilities of underwater exploration and research. This project highlights the importance of innovation and thoughtful design in the field of marine technology.
